It is likely that the original site for the town is The Bury. The word itself comes from Bearh, meaning “hill”. It is likely that this area was, as was typical of the time, a fortified hill. The Bury, the village heart with a church and pub facing, was the original area of settlement and fairs were held here from the 15th century to the 19th century.
